Gov. Jay Inslee has directed that Washington state and United States flags at all state agencies, including schools and support buildings, be lowered to half-staff August 4 and 5 in memory of two law enforcement officers.
Flags will fly at half staff on August 4 in memory of Bothell Police Officer Jonathan Shoop, 32. Officer Shoop died in the line of duty on Monday, July 13, 2020. Flags will remain at half-staff until close of business or sunset on August 4. A memorial service will take place on August 4, 2020, at 11 a.m. in Bothell and will be limited to 200 attendees.
Inslee is also deeply saddened by the death of Washington State Patrol Trooper Justin R. Schaffer, 28, and directs that flags be lowered to half-staff in his memory on Wednesday, August 5, 2020. Trooper Schaffer died in the line of duty on Tuesday, March 24, 2020. Flags should remain at half-staff until close of business or sunset on August 5. A memorial service will take place on August 5, 2020, at 11 a.m. in Lewis County and will be limited to 400 attendees.
While most OSD buildings are closed, there are some schools where flags are lit and remain on the flagpole 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Those flags will be lowered to half-staff on August 4 and 5, 2020.
