Equity Policy focus groups to begin in early November

The following is submitted by Ryan Howland, OSD director of projects and grants. Howland supports the work of the Equity Policy Steering Committee along with Facilitator Kimberlee Armstrong, Ed.D.

District policy is the cornerstone of implementing systemic change within a school district. We are closer to creating a district Equity Policy that uniquely represents all students, staff and families in Olympia.

The OSD Equity Policy Steering Committee (EPSC) is launching student-first and community-driven Equity Policy Focus Groups, starting with student-first focus groups in early November. Students, employees or community members who would like to host a focus group and share the information collected with the district have three options:

  1. Invite District Equity Focus Group Team members to moderate a focus group at a mutually agreed upon time and location;
  2. Invite District Equity Focus Group Team members to co-moderate a focus group on-site; OR,
  3. Self-facilitate a focus group and share data gathered with OSD.

Self-facilitated focus group moderators will have access to an EPSC Focus Group Toolkit, which provides an outline for how to lead a focus group along with important considerations from subject matter experts. Focus group moderators may also attend evening sessions with facilitator Kimberlee Armstrong, Ed.D., to receive additional training and preparation and have questions answered before their focus group takes place.

Stay tuned for more information about the Equity Policy Development process, including how to sign up for a focus group. Information is also available on the Equity Policy Development webpage on the district website.

Please send questions to equity@osd.wednet.edu and someone will contact you as soon as possible.

Feedback sought by November 18 for two new board policies

Strips of colored paper with "Thank You" in various languages

We invite OSD employees to provide feedback about two new board policies that went before the Olympia School Board for first reading last month and are expected to return for second reading in December.

Please review the following two new policies and procedures and share any feedback by November 18, 2022:

Language Access Policy 4218 focuses on increasing language access in public schools. It supports the district’s commitments to improving meaningful, two-way communication and promoting access to district programs, services and activities for students and their families. The policy and procedure references oral interpretation and written translation and calls for a formalized Language Access Plan and annual self-assessment of the plan beginning in the 2023-24 school year. You can see a copy of the policy and procedure on the Board Policy Review page.

Effective Communication Policy 4217 is focused on serving families/community members who request assistive listening, vision or speech aids or services for school district meetings, programs, activities or events. A copy of the policy and procedure, as wells as a form for requesting the aids/services, is also posted on the Board Policy Review page.

To provide feedback, please email communications@osd.wednet.edu

Scenic photos of the week

“Breezy Sunset At Boston Harbor,” by Barbara Close, Music Specialist, Madison Elementary School

Employees have taken beautiful photos of sunsets and blue skies in recent weeks. This week we feature two of these images, with more coming next week.

OSD employees are encouraged to email the Communications department a photo of their artwork portraying nature (e.g., landscapes, sunrises or sunsets, an interesting cloud formation, a close-up of a flower) for consideration in this staff blog. Your image can be something you captured on canvas, in a photograph, on a textile, in a pencil, charcoal or pastel drawing, with wire — the possibilities are endless!

Please remember, you can be a novice or a professional. You can submit photos taken with your phone or a fancy camera. The goal is for as many employees as possible to participate!

Guidelines:

  • Nature/scenic images only (no people or pets please).
  • Attach a photo of your original art in jpeg or png format to an email and send to communications@osd.wednet.edu. The higher the resolution, the better.
  • Photos must be in-focus and cropped so the art is visible.
  • Include your name, title, work location, and if applicable, where the image was taken (you can name the city, for example, or provide even more specific details (e.g. sunset taken from Long Beach, WA). This information will be included with each image published.

Depending on the number of images submitted, we will print one or more in each issue of the staff blog.

After a strong battle with lung cancer, long-time Support Service Center employee Pedro Bidot passed away on September 25, 2022.

Pedro began his service to the Olympia School District in October 1985 as a custodian at Capital High School. He moved to Grounds and Food Service at Olympia High School, then finished his career at SSC as the painter and eventually the plumber.

Pedro retired from the Olympia School District at the end of February 2022. Executive Director of Operations Frank Wilson said Pedro had a personality larger than life. “His smile was infectious and he was always available to provide historical perspective to issues around the district.”

A memorial service for Pedro will be held Saturday, November 5, 2022 at 2 p.m. at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 1515 Harrison Ave. N.W., Olympia, WA 98502. A celebration of life will take place at 4 p.m. at South Puget Sound Community College in Lacey, 4220 6th Ave. S.E., Lacey, WA 98503. All are welcome.

Employees may leave condolences or share memories and photos on a Tribute Wall that accompanies his obituary on the Funeral Alternatives of Washington website.

The Olympia School District is joining the rest of the country this week, October 17-21, in celebrating National School Bus Safety Week.

National School Bus Safety Week reminds students, parents, teachers and the community to keep school bus safety at the forefront. The theme this year nationally is 1 Bus + 1 Driver = A Big Impact on Education.

The Olympia School District’s Transportation team transports an average of 5,300 students to and from school every day.

Thank you to our entire OSD Transportation team!

School board appoints Talauna Reed to District 2 board director position

The Olympia School Board has unanimously agreed to appoint Talauna Reed to fill the District 2 board director position vacated by Justin McKaughan, who resigned effective August 31, 2022. The board voted on the appointment following an executive session at the October 13, 2022 board meeting.

Reed will take the oath of office during the next board meeting on Thursday, October 27. The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Knox Administrative Center, 111 Bethel St. N.E., Olympia, WA, 98506. She will serve a one-year term through December 2023.

Reed is the Lead Outreach and Advocacy Navigator at Interfaith Works where she works with unhoused community members. In that capacity, Reed facilitates training in Cultural Diversity, de-escalation, restorative justice models, anti-racism and trauma-informed care across multiple organizations and in collaboration with other Thurston County providers. She facilitates meetings in the community where she educates audiences with tools for dismantling white supremacy in order to create a more equitable society.

Reed has two children who attended Olympia schools. She has a bachelor’s degree in organizational management and was named a YWCA “Womxn of Achievement” in 2020 as part of the organization’s annual Olympia event. The YWCA describes the award as a way to amplify and celebrate inspiring South Sound community members as part of its collective work to bring about racial and gender justice.

Kudos to this week’s Everyday Heroes

Everyday Heroes Logo with the words: Celebrating OSD Employees

Everyday Heroes is a regular feature in this staff blog. Remember to submit names of employees districtwide who have done something deserving of encouragement and praise. Give a shout-out to one of your colleagues at your school or support building and watch for it to appear in an upcoming Everyday Heroes blog post.

Here are our newest honorees:

Everyday Hero
Bob Kickner, Athletic Director, Olympia High School

We have a large demand for our facilities. Between our own district use and the use of many groups in the community it can be a difficult task to accommodate everyone. Recently we discovered we had a one-week overlap for gym space and were struggling to provide opportunities for gym use to YMCA sports youth volleyball. Bob Kickner, athletic director for Olympia High School, called to see how he could help. Bob worked with our facilities use person, Carmen Panter, as well as the YMCA to provide a solution.

YMCA kids will practice at Olympia High School during the week and will be tutored by the Olympia High School team. On one of the nights they will be provided passes to watch the OHS team compete. Bob provided a great example of finding a creative way to support both our district needs and the needs of our community partner YMCA where all kids win. Thank you Bob!
Submitted by Frank Wilson, Executive Director of Operations, Support Service Center

Everyday Heroes
Todd Thornton and Theresa Jones, Groundskeepers, Support Service Center

I wanted to take this opportunity to compliment Todd and Theresa for resolving a work order that has been circulating for a few years. These two were efficient as they cleaned moss from the roof and then cleaned out the gutters around our courtyard. They were sensitive about possibly disrupting classes and communicated with staff about their work plan. Reeves greatly appreciates the hard work displayed by Tod and Theresa as they resolved an issue that has been an eyesore and caused flooding issues in the past.

How to nominate an Everyday Hero

  • Email the Communications and Community Relations Department (communications@osd.wednet.edu) a few sentences, and no more than 200 words, about why the person deserves recognition. • Write “Everyday Heroes” in the subject heading of the email.
  • Include your first and last name as the person submitting the comments.
  • Include the first and last name of the OSD employee you are recognizing.
  • Include the job title and work location (school or department) of the person you are recognizing.

All submissions will be posted in this blog on a weekly basis and archived each week.
